for first place throughout the varsity race before being outkicked
during the last 100 yards. Jessika led our ladies as she improved
over last year by about 90 seconds. Tiffany improved her time by
nearly 2 minutes. Jose had a good start on his running career with
a 2nd place finish in the frosh-soph race.

As can be seen, Matt was our star of the day as he finished 3rd in a very
good varsity field. However, most of you had good races yesterday. We did
well as a team in all three of the races. However, we will have to work
hard to develop runners who can fill our #5, #6, and #7 slots on the
varsity team at the league meet.

As can be seen, all of you that have run this course before PRd
(person record) and the three new runners ran well. I think
that we will do well when we get to the league finals. It appears
that the three best teams in our league are Gunn, Palo Alto, and
Milpitas. We will have to beat Los Altos to gain the final qualifying
slot for the CCS. That will be a difficult chore.

Varsity Boys
As can be seen, we finished 9th overall and 5th among the schools in our league.
Despite the 90-degree weather, Matt still broke the school course record by 20
seconds. Bhupinder improved his PR by 54 seconds while moving to #6 on the
all-time list.
Varsity Girls
We finished 8th out of 15 schools in a very good field and we were 5th out of the
7 schools in our league. Jessika was our start as she improved her PR by 45
seconds while setting the school record for this course. Karen improved by 14
seconds. Vietchi and Tiffany improved by a spectacular 84 and 77 seconds. Ashly
was sick but still was able to finish in this oppressive weather.
Frosh/Soph Boys
We finished 5th overall and we were 2nd among the schools in our league. Jose had
another great day as he finished 4th with a time that only 10 other Wilcox runners
have beaten during the 15 years that we have run this course. Ben Miller
recovered from his poor Ram performance with a 52-seconds improvement (Was it the
shoes?). Karl broke 15:00 by a few seconds. Danny improved by 56 seconds. All
of you ran well on a very hot day.
JV Girls
Utahna led Stephanie for about half the race before Stephanie finally caught her
and gradually pulled away.
JV Boys
We finished 5th overall and were 3rd among the schools in our league. Joe
Puentes, who had his appendix removed two weeks ago and who just started running
yesterday, ran very well to finish 11th. Yoni, Justin, Brian, and Josh were our
remaining scorers. Duc Uy improved his PR by 59 seconds, Nikola improved his by
78 seconds, and Iori improved by 84 seconds. Greg had a nice sprint at the end to
catch a runner. Carlos finished his first race.
Next Race
Our next race will be on Saturday. The bus will leave from the school at 10AM and
will probably get back near 5PM. If anyone in your family is coming to see the
race, they should take highway 280 north to hwy 92. Take hwy 92 west to Half Moon
Bay. One block before you reach hwy 1, make a right turn and drive a couple of
blocks before turning right up the hill to Half Moon Bay high school. The race
schedule is frosh boys at 12:35PM, F/S girls at 1:00PM, F/S boys at 1:25PM,
varsity girls at 1:50PM, varsity boys at 2:15PM, JV girls at 2:40PM, and JV boys
at 3:05PM.

We had a small turnout for this race (18 out of 47 on the team).
But, those that did come competed well. This was a new course.
Supposedly, it was shorter than the course that we ran last year.
But, I'm not so sure of that. It may have been longer. In any
event, Jose was our star of the day as he finished first in the
frosh race. As best that I can recall, that is the first time
in at least 20 years that a Wilcox runner has finished first in
a Saturday invitational race.

I've listed your times for the Fremont race so that you can see how you
have progressed. The Fremont race is advertised as being 2.1 miles
(176 yards longer than 2 miles) but I think that the the course is
actually 2 miles. Both the Fremont and Saratoga courses are flat.
However, there may be more grass running at Fremont, which would slow
you down.
I was very pleased with our varsity boys and frosh soph boys team
finishes of 3rd and 10th. Those of you that showed up for the JV boys
race ran well. I was hoping for a higher finish by our varsity girls
but the six teams that finished in front of us were just better teams.
Matt, although still recovering from the flu, improved his PR by 12
seconds. Bhupinder improved by 50 seconds with his top 10 finish.
Baldev improved by 82 seconds. Jose ran very well in his first varsity
race, finishing close behing Baldev.Joe was 11 seconds slower but has
been training for only 10 days because of his appendectomy operation.
Tam improved by 41 seconds. In summary, the varsity boys had a very
good day. However, Los Altos is in our league and they did beat us.
So, we will have to continue to work hard with the hope that we can
beat them at the league finals.
The frosh-soph boys had a great day as we placed 4 runners in the top
10 in a field of 62 runners. We were very close to winning. Three of
you broke 12 minutes and one missed it by a second. Ben and Danny, who
ran this course last year, both ran PRS, Ben's improvement was 10
seconds and Danny's was 29 seconds. David probably had his best race
of the season.
We had a difficult time scoring well in the boys JV race because 5 of
our top 6 runners missed the race for a variety of reasons. Devi had a
great breakthrough race as he averaged 6:19 per mile to finish 18th.
Iori PRd by 20 seconds. Josh came within 2 seconds of his PR. Nikola
and Kevin slipped under 14 minutes.
The results for our girls were mixed. I was hoping that we would be
competitive with Los Altos as we will probably be battling them for the
last qualifying spot at the CCS when we run the league meet. But, they
proved to be much better than us. They put 5 runners in front of our
#2 runner and 8 runners in front of our #3 runner. On the positive
side, Jessika ran a super race to finish 4th overall in a good field.
This may have been her best-ever cross country race. Karen ran a solid
race but was a bit slower than last year. Tiffany, Ashly, and Vietchi
ran together for most of the race. Tiffany missed her PR by 7 seconds,
Ashly was 51 seconds slower than last year, and Vietchi was 29 seconds
slower. Laura seemed to be running hard the whole race but was 24
seconds slower than last year. Eleheh had a great day as she ran
nearly 4 minutes faster than at Fremont.

This was a very good race for most of you. Jose and Matt won their races. The boys
had the 4th best combined team time of the day, 43 seconds behind the first team.
The girls ran their best race of the season with Francine showing the most
improvement. Tiffany had an off day but didn't give up and ran hard all of the way
to help make us a better team. 13 of you ran PRs (personal records) for this course.
There were 128 runners in the frosh-soph girls race, 72 in the junior/senior girls
race, 97 in the frosh boys race, 117 in the soph boys race, 90 in the junior boys
race, and 80 in the senior boys race. My guess is that the boys should subtract 30
seconds and the girls 45 seconds in order to compare their times to last week

In general, you did extremely well. Six of you earned all-league
honors by finishing in the top 15 in the varsity races and in the top
10 in the frosh-soph race.
Our varsity boys ran their fastest-ever team time for this course since
Wilcox and Peterson merged as high schools in 1981. Our varsity girls
ran their best team time since 1993.
The frosh-soph boys ran well to finish third.

There were 22 teams in division 2 this season and 13 of them qualified to run in the
CCS meet. There were 110 teams in the entire CCS. Based upon a comparison of all
teams who ran in the CCS, we were the 12th best boys' team.
This was an excellent finish to our season. We finished 3rd, just one place away
from qualifying for the State meet. Matt broke the school record for the Crystal
Springs course. Jose improved to #8 on the allŠtime list. Baldev knocked 12 seconds
off his PR, Ben broke the 18:00 barrier, and Karl got very close at 18:05.
Although the girls were one of the top 25 teams in the CCS, they did not qualify for
the CCS because our league was so strong. However, Jessika and Vietchi qualified as
individuals and did very well. Jessika improved her PR by 7 seconds and Vietchi was
on her way to a PR before being slowed by a bee sting.
