This was a tough day to begin the season as the temperature was 90 degrees. Heat slows all runners
and and slows some runners a lot, especially if you have not trained much.
Dennis Sullivan was our star of the day as he finished a close second in the frosh-soph race,
losing in the last few yards. Mike Varela ran well to finish 6th in the varsity race.
Jessika Vale and Vietchi Rodriguez were the leaders for the girls.
Hopefully, we'll get cooler weather for the Fremont race. I was pleased with all of your efforts
under the very adverse conditions today.
Our next race will be the Firebird Invitational at Fremont high school. This is a 2.05 mile course
that is run on a flat course around the Fremont school grounds. Last year 16 schools participated
in the meet, including 5 of the 7 schools that are in our league.
The race schedule is as follows -- 3:30 PM - Varsity Boys. 3:50 PM - Varsity Girls. 4:15 PM -
Boys Frosh/Soph. 4:35 PM - Girls JV. 4:55 PM - Boys JV.
You must have your physical and emergency cards to me prior to the race in order to compete.

The SCVAL is the league that we are in. Gunn and Palo Alto, and Mt. View are
also in the SCVAL but did not compete in this meet. I've listed the fastest
five times for each of the teams in the SCVAL that competed in this meet, even
if the runner did not compete in the varsity race.
As can be seen, Matt was our star of the day as he finished 4th in a very good
varsity field. Danny Torres and Mike Varela made tremendous improvements over
last year. In general, all of you ran very well. Matt, Bhupinder, Dennis, and
Jose were able to win medals in this tough competition.
Our next race is a 2-miler on the Saratoga high school campus on Thursday, 9/21.
We will get out of class at 1:45PM and the bus will leave at 2PM. The first race
will be the varsity boys at 3:30PM, followed by the varsity girls at 3:50PM, then
the FS boys at 4:15PM, the JV girls at 4:40PM, and the JV boys at 5:05PM. My
guess is that we will get back to the school at between 6:15PM and 6:30PM.

I've listed your times for the Fremont race so that you can see how you
have progressed. The Fremont race is advertised as being 2.1 miles (176
yards longer than 2 miles) but I think that the the course is probably
less than 2 miles. Both the Fremont and Saratoga courses are flat.
However, there may be more grass running at Fremont, which would slow
you down. Based upon the times of Matt, Bhupinder, Mike Varela, and some
of the Los Gatos boy runners, all of whom are in good condition and ran
well at both races, my guess is that the Saratoga course is about 10
seconds slower than the Fremont course. So, if ran faster than 10
seconds over your Fremont time, you probably improved from the last race.
As can be seen, both our varsity boys and girls finished 4th and our
frosh-soph boys finished 3rd. The varsity girls were just 3 points out
of 2nd.
Matt and Bhupinder led the varsity boys while winning medals for their
top 15 finishers. Matt improved his time over last year by 24 seconds,
Bhupinder improved by 32 seconds, and Mike improved by 56 seconds.
Robert showed tremendous improvement over his first race and Ben
continued to improve.
Jose, Mike, and David all won medals for their top 10 finishes in the
frosh-soph race. Mike improved his time by 38 seconds over last year.
Jose and Mike were somewhat slower than last year but were probably in
better shape for this race last year because it was run later in the
season. Satinder and Matt showed great improvement. There were 68
finishers in this race.
Danny Torres led the JV boys while winning a medal for his 10th place
finish. He improved his time by 29 seconds over last year. Dan Ngo
looked good in his first cross country race in two yers. Tam made
progress in comparison to last week but has a long way to go to get back
to his form of last year. Carlos improved over last week.
Vietchi and Jessika won medals in the varsity girls race. Vietchi
improved her time from last year by 102 seconds, Utahna improved by 47
seconds, and Tiffany improved by 34 seconds. Jasmin ran another good
race.
Miriam led our JV girls with her 4th place finish. Stephanie ran well
while improving her course best by 23 seconds. Jacqueline ran well while
running every step of the race without walking for the first time. She
has made very good progress since the start of the season. Eleheh ran
hard but needs more training before she can get back to her times of last
season.
Our next race will be the Central Park Invitational on next Tuesday. We
will get out of class at 1:45PM and the bus will leave at 2PM. The boys
frosh-soph race will start at 3:15PM, the varsity boys race will start at
3:40PM, the varsity girls race will start at 4:05PM, the JV boys race
will start at 4:30PM, and the JV girls race will start at 4:55PM.
Central Park is on Kiely Blvd in Santa Clara across the street from
Kaiser hospital.

Varsity Boys
As can be seen, we finished 2nd overall and 1st among the schools in our league. Matt
broke his own school course record by 11 seconds. Bhupinder tied the former school course
record while improving his PR by 44 seconds. Mike improved his PR by 134 seconds. Matt,
Bhupinder, Mike, and Dennis all won medals for their top 30 finishers. This was a very
good performance and indicates that we can win our first league championship in 35 years.
Varsity Girls
We finished 9th in a very good field and we were 5th out of the 7 schools in our league.
The first five teams are all ranked in the top 10 of CCS team. Vietchi led our team with a
time that moved her to #3 on the all-time school list for this course, just 11 seconds
behind Jessika's record. Jasmin ran her best race of the year. Jessika, Tiffany, and
Miriam ran hard to complete a good team effort. Vietchi won a team medal for her top 30
finish.
Frosh/Soph Race
We finished 7th overall and 4th among the 7 teams in our league. David and Mike had a
great battle for the top dog of Wilcox frosh-soph runners with David eking out a narrow
win. Albert improved his PR by 70 seconds. Satinder and Matt continued to run well as
they averaged 6:51 and 7:03 per mile for this 2.3-mile course. David and Mike won medals
for their top 25 finishes in this race.
JV Girls
We finished 8th overall and 4th out of 7 teams in our league. Utahna led the way with a
32nd place finish. She improved her time from last year by two minutes. Asuka and
Jacqueline had a great sprint finish with Asuka edging Jacqueline by a nose. Stephanie
improved her best time by 54 seconds. Tammy looked good in her first cross country race,
running for almost the entire distance.
JV Boys
We were not able to score as we did not have a complete team. The real excitement in this
race was seeing whether Dan and Danny could win a medal for a top 20 finish in this race.
They just barely made it as they sprinted to the finish with a pack of five runners and
came up with 19th and 20th place finishes. Paul ran his best race of the season, averaging
6:33 per mile for the 2.3-mile distance. Tam got a little closer to his form of last year
as he averaged 6:55 per mile.
Next Race
Our next race will be on Saturday. The bus will leave from the school at 7:45AM and will
probably get back near 3PM. If anyone in your family is coming to see the race, they
should take highway 280 north toward San Francisco. Take the Pacifica-Mission St. turn-
off, which is opposite the Serramonte Shopping Center. As you come off the freeway, stay
in the left hand lane going toward Pacifica. Then, take Skyline Blvd north (Hwy 35). This
exit is the second exit and is only about 1/4 mile from 280. Once on Skyline, take the
first right at the stop light. This will be Westmoor Avenue. Westmoor high school, the
site of the race, will be straight ahead, approximately four block from your last turn.
The parking lot is located in the back of the school. The race schedule is frosh boys at
10AM, frosh/soph girls at 10:30AM, soph boys at 11AM, JV girls at 11:30AM, JV boys at noon,
varsity girls at 12:30PM, and varsity boys at 1PM.

I an sure that all of you enjoyed running/walking up the famous
hill behind Half Moon Bay high school on Saturday. We will not
see another hill as tough as that one the rest of the season. I
am glad to see that all of you survived the experience. Congrats
to Alex and Omar for running and finishing their first race.
Also, congrats to Miriam for winning a medal in the girls
frosh/soph race. Jose was our top boy runner while missing
winning a medal by one place.
There were 190 finishers in the varsity boys race, 155 finishers
in the varsity girls race, 174 finishers in the boys frosh/soph
race, 82 finishers in the girls frosh/soph race, and 136 finishers
in the boys JV race.
Our next race will be on Thursday on the Crystal Springs course in
Belmont. This will be the same course on which we run our league
meet finals. Thus, it is important that we run this course once
before the league finals. The bus will leave at 2PM and the race
schedule will be as follows: Soph boys at 3:15PM, varsity boys at
3:30PM, varsity girls at 3:45PM, frosh boys at 4PM, JV boys at
4:15PM, and JV girls at 4:30PM. I think that we will get back to
the school by 6:15PM. To get to the race, take hwy 280 north,
then east onto hwy 92, then (immediately) take the Ralston turnoff
and turn left onto Ralston, then at the second signal (Hallmark)
turn right. The course is about a mile down Hallmark on the

Bhupinder led the boys with a great 16:06 to move to #6 on the
all-time list for this course. Dennis, Jose, and David finished
1st, 3rd, and 7th in a field of over 100 runners in the soph race.
Dan Ngo improved his best time on this course from 3 years ago by
99 seconds. Satinder ran very well in the frosh race.
The official results for this race won't be prepared until next
week but it appears that our varsity girls finished 4th. Vietchi
was super again with the 10th best-ever time run on this course by
a Wilcox girl runner. The remainder of you ran very well. We
have a very good team. Utahna improved her PR by 68 seconds. We
will run this course again at the league finals. All girls who
break 24:00 at any time during the season will receive their
varsity block. The standard for the boys is sub-19:00.

This was a great way to complete our regular season - two first place team finishes a second place
finish, and a fourth place finish. And, you won 25 medals.
I was proud of all of you. You showed a great competitive spirit to run under the very
adverse weather conditions. The varsity boys race started under poor conditions with a light rain
and muddy conditions. But, it got worse. We got hit with a deluge of rain during the latter part
of the varsity girls race and it continued to rain hard through the JV boys and JV girls races with
the course turning into a swimming pool. Some of you ran PRs (Personal Records) under these
miserable conditions but I'm sure that there would have been many more under normal conditions.
I want to make special note of some individuals. David Aubuchon has shown great improvement this
season and was rewarded with a first place finish in the JV boys race. Vietchi has improved a lot
and looked super in finishing 2nd in the varsity girls race. Matt an Bhupinder again ran well and
they give us what is probably our greatest ever one-two punch in cross country. Karl Skucha has
worked hard to recover from his stress fracture. He surprisingly finished 6th in his first race of
the season. Jessika Vale, Jasmin Kim, and Miriam Cortez have competed well despite having to cope
with leg and knee injuries. If they had given up, as some might have done, we would not be nearly
as good a team as we are. Also, I should note that Matt and Vietchi broke the school record for
these courses.
The league meet will be run on Tuesday on the Crystal Springs course. The bus will leave at
12:30 PM. The frosh-soph boys will run at 2:15PM, the varsity boys at 2:45PM, the varsity girls at
3:15PM, the JV boys at 3:40PM, and the JV girls at 3:50PM. It is important that you be well rested
going into this race.
All of you should concentrate hard throughout the league meet race. Get off to a good start but
not a foolishly fast pace. Then, concentrate on running at a good tempo throughout the race. You
should especially remember to pick up the pace whenever you finish a long uphill. Do not get
discouraged when you get passed during the race (if that happens). Just bear down and try to stay
close to the runner that just passed you. Remember that every place that you can gain or keep near
the end of the race may be very important. Often, team finishing places are decided by just one
point.

In general, you did well. Six of you earned all-league honors by finishing in the top 15
in the varsity races or the top 10 in the frosh-soph boys and JV girls races or the top 5
in the JV boys race.
Our varsity boys ran their fastest-ever team time for this course since Wilcox and Peterson
merged as high schools in 1981. We also won our first league championship in 35 years. Yea.
Mike Nguyen looked good wobbling over the finish line. Jacqueline appeared to be happy
during the last 50 yards when she knew that she was going to break 24:00. I will probably
make the girls varsity standard 24:10 for this year. Jessika, Jasmin, and Miriam ran well
considering that they have not been able to train well due to leg injuries. Tiffany took a
tumble around the 2-mile mark but was able to get up and finish. Dan Ngo had a great race
to finish his high school cross country career after having a bummer race last Thursday.
All of the varsity boys were jubilant over their victory and voted to let Jake treat them
to pizza to celebrate the event.
