The SCVAL is the league that we are in. Gunn and Palo Alto are also in the SCVAL but did not compete in this meet.
I've listed the fastest five times for each of the teams in the SCVAL that competed in this meet, even if the
runner did not compete in the varsity race.
There were numerous excellent performances today. Our highlight was the varsity boys winning their race for
the first time in the 18 years that we have been competing in this race. When comparing your times to last
year that I believe that the course that we ran last year was shorter. Also, the course was a bit slower
because of the heavy watering that they had done on the grass just prior to our races.
Our next race is a 2-miler or the Saratoga high school campus on Thursday, 9/20. We will get out of class at
1:45PM and the bus will leave at 2PM. The first race will be the varsity boys at 3:30PM, followed by the
varsity girls at 3:50PM, then the FS boys at 4:15PM, the JV girls at 4:40PM, and the JV boys at 5:05PM. My
guess is that we will get back to the school at between 6:15PM and 6:30PM.

I've listed your times for the Fremont race so that you can see
how you have progressed. The Fremont race is advertised
as being 2.05 miles (88 yards longer than 2 miles) but I
think that that course is probably very close to 2 miles.
Both the Fremont and Saratoga courses are flat.
This was a non-scoring meet. However, if you compare team
times (the cumulative times of the top 5 runners for each
team), which generally reflect what the point scores would be,
our varsity boys finished 2nd, our varsity girls finished 2nd,
our frosh-soph boys finished 6th, our JV boys finished 2nd,
and our JV girls finished 3rd. There were 54 finishers in the
varsity boys race, 33 in the varsity girls race, 85 in the boys
frosh-soph race, 43 in the girls JV race, and 45 in the boys JV race.
Karl and Matt led the varsity boys. Karl won by a fraction over
Saratoga's top runner. His time missed the course record by 2
seconds. Matt improved a good PR (personal record) for this course
by 7 seconds, and David improved his PR by 72 seconds. Saratoga
beat us handily today but we have a very good team and can beat them
if we have a good day when we race them again on Tuesday.
Satinder and Jacob led our frosh-soph team with their top 10 finishes.
Satinder edged Jacob by a foot while improving his course PR by nearly
two minutes. Jose and Kevin ran well in their first race.
Amir led the JV boys race until he strayed off course about a half mile
from the end, recovering to finish 8th. Danny and Terry had great sprints
at the end of the race but Danny was slightly faster as they finished 2nd
and 3rd, just in front of the 4th place finisher. Marty, Babu, and Alex L
showed improvemnet over their last race.
Vietchi broke the school record for this course by 21 seconds and improved
her PR by 52 seconds while finishing 5th in a very good field. Tiffany and
Jasmin ran very well while improving their PRs by about a minute. Jessika
ran 5 seconds better than her time of last year. Tammy did an excellent
job of replacing the injured Jacqueline Kwan. We have four very good varsity
runners in Vietchi, Tiffany, Jessika, and Jasmin. As things presently stand,
this is probably our best-ever girls team. However, we need at least one
more runner (Jackie, Tammy, Aggie, Kim, Vivian?) to make a breakthrough and
get near Jasmin to make us one of the better CCS (Central Coast Section) teams.
Kim edged Vivian to lead our JV girls. Both showed good improvement over
their previous race. Alexandra, Cierra, Karinna, and Sharlee competed well
in thier first race.
Our next race will be the Central Park Invitational on next Tuesday. We will
get out of class at 1:45PM and the bus will leave at 2:00PM. Please be on time
as the bus driver will not wait. They have other pickups to make. Several
runners missed the bus for the race today. The boys frosh-soph race will start
at 3:15PM, the varsity boys race will start at 3:40PM, the varsity girls race
will start at 4:05PM, the JV boys race will start at 4:30PM, and the JV girls
race will start at 4:55PM. Central Park is on Kiely Blvd in Santa Clara across
the street from Kaiser hospital.

As can be seen, we finished 2nd overall and 1st among the
schools in our league. Karl broke Matt's school course record
by 12 seconds. Karl, Matt, Mike, and David Aubuchon took home
medals for their top 25 finishes. David improved his PR by 84
seconds.
Varsity Girls
We finished 8th in a very good field and we were 4th out of
the 7 schools in our league. All of the teams that beat us
are probably in the top 15 in the entire CCS. Vietchi led our
team with a time that broke the school course record by 51 seconds.
Tiffany's time put her #2 on the all-time list. Jessika is 3rd
and Jasmin is now #10. As can be seen, we beat Los Altos and Mt.
View, the two teams that we will have to beat to finish 4th at
the league finals and qualify for the CCS meet.
Frosh/Soph Race
Jacob was sick and Khoa and Kevin did not make it to the race. So,
we had an incomplete team. Satinder ran another good race, improving
his PR by 2 minutes, to win a medal for his top 25 finish. Wesley
and Ming had a good race with Wesley sprinting away from Ming at
the end. Jose looked good for most of the race but got a side stich
near the end of the race.
JV Girls
We finished 9th overall and 5th out of the 7 teams in our league.
Kim led the way with a 68th place finish. Victoria, Amila, and Aida
ran well in their first race.
JV Boys
We finished 6th overall and 4th out of the 7 teams in our league. All
of you ran well. Amir and Danny won medals for their top 20 finish.
They had a very close finish with Amir just holding on for the win.
Next Race
Our next race will be on Saturday. The bus will leave from the school
at 7:50AM and will probably get back near 3PM. If anyone in your family
is coming to see the race, they should take highway 280 north toward San
Francisco. Take the Pacifica-Mission St. turn-off, which is opposite
the Serramonte Shopping Center. As you come off the freeway, stay in
the left hand lane going toward Pacifica. Then, take Skyline Blvd north
(Hwy 35). This exit is the second exit and is only about 1/4 mile from 280.
Once on Skyline, take the first right at the stop light. This will be
Westmoor Avenue. Westmoor high school, the site of the race, will be
straight ahead, approximately four block from your last turn. The parking
lot is located in the back of the school. The race schedule is frosh boys
at 10AM, frosh/soph girls at 10:30AM, soph boys at 11AM, JV girls at 11:30AM,
JV boys at noon, varsity girls at 12:30PM, and varsity boys at 1PM.

All of you gave good efforts today on our first hilly course. And,
five of you were good enough to win medals - Karl, Matt, Mike V,
Vietchi, and Tiffany in the difficult varsity races. Karl broke the
school course record for this course by 22 seconds. Vietchi broke
her own girls school course record by a whopping 87 seconds. Tiffany
also ran under the former girls course record by 17 seconds. The
varsity boys finished 4th in their race behind Madera, Serra, and
Castro Valley. I will not know until later in the week how we did
in the other races.
Our next race will be on Saturday. The bus will leave from the
school at 10AM and will probably get back near 5:30PM. If anyone
in your family is coming to see the race, they should take highway
280 north to hwy 92. Take hwy 92 west to Half Moon Bay. One block
before you reach hwy 1, make a right turn and drive a couple of blocks
before turning right up the hill to Half Moon Bay high school.

All of you did a great job on this very difficult
course. Congrats to our varsity boys for finishing
4th in a very tough field. Karl broke the boys school
record while finishing 2nd. Matt got a top ten finish.
Vietchi ran great to finish 14th in her race. Our
varsity girls finished 15th, the JV boys finished 8th,
and the frosh-soph girls finished 8th.
If you want to determine whether you improved upon your
Ram Invitational performance of last week, subtract
45/50 seconds from your Ram time if you were a 16:00-minute
runner or better and 55/60 seconds if you were slower than
16:00. If you bettered that adjusted time, you improved
this week. Based upon that adjustment, Rex showed a
tremendous amount of improvement this week.
There were 211 finishers in the varsity boys race, 142
finishers in the varsity girls race, 164 finishers in t
he boys frosh/soph race, 85 finishers in the girls
frosh/soph race, 131 finishers in the boys JV race, and
138 finishers in the boys frosh race.
Our next race will be on Thursday on the Crystal Springs
course in Belmont. This will be the same course on which
we run our league meet finals. Thus, it is important that
we run this course once before the league finals. The
bus will leave at 1:45PM and the race schedule will be
as follows: Soph boys at 3:15PM, varsity boys at 3:30PM,
varsity girls at 3:45PM, frosh boys at 4PM, JV boys at 4:15PM,
and JV girls at 4:30PM. I think that we will get back to
the school by 6:15PM. To get to the race, take hwy 280 north,
then east onto hwy 92, then (immediately) take the Ralston
turnoff and turn left onto Ralston, then at the second signal
(Hallmark) turn right. The course is about a mile down Hallmark

Not a great day for the varsity boys. Matt ran well to get
3rd and David Aubuchon improved his best by 37 seconds.
Satinder got 9th in the soph race while improving his best
time by nearly 2 minutes. The JV boys ran well.
The varsity girls did very well as three of our top four
ran PRs and Jessida Vale ran her best race of the year while
coming within 18 seconds of her best time (run in 1999).
All of the girls competed well today. We will run this course
again at the league finals. All girls who break 24:00 at any
time during the season for this course will receive their varsity
block. The standard for the boys is sub-19:00.

In general, the performances at the Center Meet last week for the boys were
a downer. However, this week, you guys rebounded and ran very well. Matt
broke the school course record while winning. Karl tied the course record.
David again ran well. Dennis recovered from his terrible performance last
week. Satinder ran great, getting within 17 seconds of David. Jacob, after
missing four races due to a soccer injury, came back to get a 6th in the frosh
race. James ran well. Danny knocked 38 seconds off his previous PR while
nipping Ben. Amir ran his best race on a 3-mile course. Phuc improved his PR
by 7 seconds. And, the rest of you had good days. Our junior boys team finished
3rd and our senior boys team finished 4th. If Mike Varela had been able to run,
we would probably have won the senior race. In general, this course is 30 seconds
slower than the course that we ran last week and maybe even slower because of the
heat. So, if you were no more than 30 seconds slower than last week, you improved.
All who finished in the top 15 in their race, won a t-shirt. So, 6 of you came
home with a prize.
We have only one more race before the league finals on October 30. That race will
be a flat 2.1 mile race at Lynbrook. Let's keep training well and be ready to run
well at the finals.

I have mixed feelings about the girls for this meet. We have 21 girls on this
team but only 10 were able to run in the race. That was not good. Fortunately,
Miss Traudt was able to snag one additional girl (otherwise, we would have had 12
missing girls) before she left and we were able to field two complete scoring teams.
I believe that our frosh-soph girls finished 6th and our junior-senior girls finished 4th.
The positive side of the day is that almost all of you that did run had great days.
Vietchi recorded the 3rd best-ever time by a Wilcox girl runner in the 21 years that
we have been running this course and she hung right in there with some highly ranked
CCS runners to finish 6th. Tiffany, as usual, ran very well, improving her PR by 82
seconds. Jessika ran her second consecutive excellent race while improving her PR by
9 seconds. Jasmin completed our fearsome foursome by knocking 41 seconds off her PR.
Vivian continued to improve. Jacqueline competed well despite having very sore upper
legs. Agnes, Malina, and Cierra did well despite losing time when they drifted off
course. Eleheh was our fifth scorer on the 4th-place junior-senior team.
We have only one more race before the league finals on October 30. That race will
be a flat 2.1 mile race at Lynbrook. Let's keep training well and be ready to run
well at the finals.

This was a great way to complete our regular season - one first place team finish, two second
place finishes, and a fourth place finish. And, you won 25 medals.
I was proud of all of you. You ran under less than ideal conditions - warm weather (80 degrees)
and a muddy soccer field that you had to runn around twice. The varsity girls scored a surprise
win over two good teams -- Saratoga and Lynbrook. The varsity boys finished second behind a very
good Saratoga team. The Jv girls got a second, taking home seven medals. And, the JV boys
finished 4th. If Danny Torres hadn't suffered a concussion last night during his senior skit,
we probably would have finished 2md.
I want to make special note of some individuals. Karl and Vietchi broke the school boys and
girls records for this course. All six of the varsity girls ran great as they broke the school
team time record for this course by over a minute. Satinder Chatha and Phuc Tran improved their
PRs by over two minutes each.
The league meet will be run on Tuesday on the Crystal Springs course. The bus will leave at
12:30 PM. The frosh-soph boys will run at 2:15PM, the varsity boys at 2:45PM, the varsity girls
at 3:15PM, the JV boys at 3:40PM, and the JV girls at 3:50PM. It is important that you be well
rested going into this race. Don't mess yourself up over the weekend.
All of you should concentrate hard throughout the league meet race. Get off to a good start but
not a foolishly fast pace. Then, concentrate on running at a good tempo throughout the race.
You should especially remember to pick up the pace whenever you finish a long uphill. Do not get
discouraged when you get passed during the race (if that happens). Just bear down and try to stay
close to the runner that just passed you. Remember that every place that you can gain or keep near
the end of the race may be very important. Often, team finishing places are decided by just one
point.

This was a great way to finish our season as most
of you ran PRs (personal records) for this course.
It does not count as a personal record if you have
not run the course before.
It was disappointing that our varsity boys did not
win their second consecutive league championship.
However, we have no complaints. You all ran great
times. We just have to give credit to Gunn for running
better. Matt won the first individual title by a
Wilcox cross country runner since 1975.
The varsity girls ran super. You broke the school
record for the Crystal Springs course with a time of
106:32. This means that you are the best Wilcox team in
the 25 years that Wilcox has been fielding girls cross
country teams. Your team time shows that you would have
won the league championship three different times in the
past, including the years 1994 and 1995. Our league is
very strong in girls competition. Thus, your 4th place
finish, which qualified you for the CCS meet for the
first time since 1994, was a significant accomplishment.
Vietchi ran 19:35. This is the #3 time by a Wilcox runner
on this course and is the first time that a Wilcox
girl has broken 20 minutes on this course since 1986.
I was pleased that the frosh-soph boys were able to field
a complete team. You finished 6th as Khoa led the way
with a sub-20:00 run.
The JV girls finished 4th. All of you ran well. Agnes,
Alexandra, and Cierra had substantial improvements on
their previous times for this course.
The JV boys finished 3rd with 52 points behind the winning
scores of 48 and 50. All of you ran your best races of the
season. I was elated to see your high finish.

This was a good finish to the season. The boys finished 6th and
the girls finished 10th in the tough division 1. Overall, our
boys had the 13th best score if we combined all of the teams and
our girls finished 31st. Matt qualified for the state meet for
the 3rd year in a row. Karl missed qualifying by one place and
Vietch missed by two places.
