We had reasonably good weather for this race (70?) and it seemed
like most of us had good days. Joseph Aubuchon (class of 98)
had the fastest time of the day for all competitors. Davvid led
for most of the varsity boys race before finishing 5th. David Emmert
led the JV boys with a 4th place finish. Sergio had a great spring
kick to get 5th in the frosh/soph race. Jennifer led the varsity
girls in her first race. And, Anna led the JV girls.
Our next race will be the Fremont Invitational at Fremont high school.
This is a 2.05 mile course that is run on a flat course around the
Fremont school grounds. Last year 17 schools participated in the meet,
including 5 of the 7 schools that are in our league.
The race schedule is as follows -- 3:30 PM - Varsity Boys.
3:50 PM - Varsity Girls. 4:15 PM - Boys Frosh/Soph.
4:35 PM - Girls JV. 4:55 PM - Boys JV.
You must have your physical and emergency cards to me prior
to the race in order to compete.

The SCVAL is the league that we are in. Gunn and Palo Alto are also in the
SCVAL but did not compete in this meet. I've listed the top five times for
each of the teams in the SCVAL that competed in this meet.
I was very pleased with our performances as in general everyone ran well.
Our next race is a 2-miler or the Saratoga high school campus on Thursday, 9/19.
We will get out of class at 1:45PM and the bus will leave at 2:15 PM. The first
race will be the varsity boys at 3:30PM, followed by the varsity girls at 3:50PM,
then the FS boys at 4:15PM, the JV girls at 4:40PM, and the JV boys at 5:05PM.
My guess is that we will get back to the school at between 6:15PM and 6:30PM.

race was 70 degrees whereas it was 90 degrees today.
There were 52 finishers in the varsity boys race, 36 in the varsity
girls race, 67 in the boys frosh-soph race, 50 in the girls JV race,
and 85 in the boys JV race.
David, Satinder, and Jacob bettered their PRs in the varsity boys
race despite the hot weather conditions. We still need a 5th runner
to get close to Jacob so that we can become a more competitive team.
Dennis is working harder in his workouts. So, I hope that he will
soon be running close to David.
Sergio had another good race to lead the frosh-soph. He had a nice
finish to win his first-ever medal. Ming continued to run well, breaking
13 minutes. Wesley and Patrick continued to run well but the hot weather
probably affected them more than others as they did better at Fremont.
Terry Wong blasted out fast at the start, leading for at least the first
half mile and then hung on to finish 3rd in the JV race. David Emmert was
back in about 50th place early in the race but moved through the field
during the 2nd half mile to finish 7th. Michael Hoang had his best race
ever to finish 11th and win a medal. Jose also ran very well as did Phuc
to help us finish 2nd in the team competition.
Vivian, our #1 runner at Fremont, was not able to run in the varsity girls
race due to illness. Jennifer and Jacqueline ran great to win medals.
They finished half a second apart. Aggie again ran super. Alexandra and
Tammy ran hard but the hot weather conditions slowed them.
Navjeet Kaur ran a blistering last half lap to pass several girls and finish
5th in the JV girls race. Eleheh had her best race of the year.
Our next race will be the Central Park Invitational on next Tuesday. We
will get out of class at 2:00PM and the bus will leave at 2:15PM. Please
be on time as the bus driver will not necessarily wait. They have other
pickups to make. The boys frosh-soph race will start at 3:15PM, the varsity
boys race will start at 3:40PM, the varsity girls race will start at 4:05PM,
the JV boys race will start at 4:30PM, and the JV girls race will start at
4:55PM. Central Park is on Kiely Blvd in Santa Clara across the street
from Kaiser hospital.

Boys
The Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL) consists of two divisions –
the El Camino and DeAnza divisions. We are in the El Camino division. All
of the teams in the SCVAL competed in this meet. The teams in the El
Camino division include us, Santa Clara, Gunn, Palo Alto, Mt.View, Los Altos,
and Milpitas. Our varsity must finish 4th or higher in the El Camino finals in
order to qualify to run in the Section meet. Gunn’s varsity boys did not compete
in this meet because they ran in a meet in Hawaii on Saturday. As can be seen,
all of the other El Camino teams beat us except Mt.View. So, we are going to
have to work very hard between now and the end of the season if we want to
finish in the #4 spot or higher.
I was a little bit disappointed today in that our varsity boys did not improve on
their times from this meet last year. However, it was warmer than last year.
So, maybe that affected your performances. In general, the rest of you ran very
well, especially Sergio, Ming, Patrick, and Wesley in the frosh-soph race. Some
of you ran poorly because you had a big lunch and were sick during the race.
You should try to eat a small lunch of plain food prior to a race (Not pizza or
some other greasy food).
Girls
Although our varsity finished 10th, most of the teams that beat us are very good
teams. Milpitas, Gunn (who did not compete in the varsity races), and Palo Alto
are very good teams. So we are going to have to beat Los Altos, Mt.View, and
Santa Clara at the division finals if we want to make it to the Section meet. The
times for the top Los Altos runners were 15:47, 16:20, 16:33, 17:40, and 18:30
compared to our times of 16:37, 16:58, 17:09, 17:18, and 17:19. The top Los
Altos runner did not compete in this meet. The times for the Mt.View runners
were 16:51, 16:51, 17:03, 17:06, and 17:50. They may have run their top runner
in the JV race (Complete results of that race are not yet available). So, as is the
case with the boys, we will have to continue to work hard if we want to beat Los
Altos and Mt.View.
Our JV girls competed well. Jill did particularly well after being sick for a week.
One other item to note. Vietchi Rodriguez and Tiffany Tang were our two best
runners last year, running this course in 14:51 and 15:39. Their times on this
course as freshmen in 1998 were 18:43 and 18:50. Vivian, our top runner today,
ran 19:06 as a freshman last year. Jacqueline, our #2 runner today, ran 18:16 as
a freshman in 2000.
Next Race
Our next race will be on Saturday. The bus will leave from the school at 7:50AM
and will probably get back near 3PM. If anyone in your family is coming to see
the race, they should take highway 280 north toward San Francisco. Take the
Pacifica-Mission St. turn-off, which is opposite the Serramonte Shopping Center.
As you come off the freeway, stay in the left hand lane going toward Pacifica.
Then, take Skyline Blvd north (Hwy 35). This exit is the second exit and is only
about 1/4 mile from 280. Once on Skyline, take the first right at the stop light.
This will be Westmoor Avenue. Westmoor high school, the site of the race, will
be straight ahead, approximately four block from your last turn. The parking lot
is located in the back of the school. The race schedule is frosh boys at 10AM,
frosh/soph girls at 10:30AM, soph boys at 11AM, JV girls at 11:30AM, JV boys at
noon, varsity girls at 12:30PM, and varsity boys at 1PM.

I was disappointed that only 22 out of 60 were able to run in this
important developmental race. I realized that a certain percentage
will have a valid excuse to miss a race but when 2/3s of the team
fails to make it to a race, that shows a general lack of commitment
to a team.
All of you gave good efforts today on our first hilly course. And,
three of you were good enough to win medals - Jennifer, Vivian,
and Sergio. Jennifer’s and Vivian’s times were good enough to
put them #s 3 and 4 on the all-time girls list for this course.
Our next race will be on Saturday. The bus will leave from the
school at 10AM and will probably get back near 5:30PM. If anyone
in your family is coming to see the race, they should take highway
280 north to hwy 92. Take hwy 92 west to Half Moon Bay. One
block before you reach hwy 1, make a right turn and drive a couple
of blocks before turning right up the hill to Half Moon Bay high school.

All of you did a great job on this very difficult course. 8 out of the 9
runners who have previously run this course ran PRs (personal records).
Based upon combined team times, our boys finished 59th out of 96 teams
and our girls finished 43rd out of 92 teams.
If you want to determine whether you improved upon your Ram Invitational
performance of last week, subtract 45/50 seconds from your Ram time if you
were a 16:00-minute runner or better and 55/60 seconds if you were slower
than 16:00. If you bettered that adjusted time, you improved this
week. However, this adjustment does not take into consideration the fact
that it was warmer today than last Saturday.
There were 297 finishers in the varsity boys race, 222 finishers in
the varsity girls race, 217 finishers in the boys frosh/soph race, 167 finishers
in the girls JV race, 272 finishers in the boys JV race, and 194 finishers in
the boys frosh race.
Our next race will be on Tuesday on the Crystal Springs course in Belmont.
This will be the same course on which we run our league meet finals. Thus,
it is important that we run this course once before the league finals. The
bus will leave at 1:45PM and the race schedule will be as follows:
Frosh/Soph boys at 3:30PM, varsity boys at 3:50PM, varsity girls at 4:10PM,
JV boys at 4:30PM, and JV girls at 4:50PM. I think that we will get back to
the school by 6:30PM. To get to the race, take hwy 280 north, then east onto
hwy 92, then (immediately) take the Ralston turnoff and turn left onto
Ralston, then at the second signal (Hallmark) turn right. The course
is about a mile down Hallmark on the right.

This was not a great day for running 3 miles in the hills mid 80s. However,
most of you were able to get through the course. Your times will be much better
when we run this course again at the league finals on 11/6. Hopefully, we’ll
get some high 50s weather for the finals.
The highlights for the day were our varsity boys getting 6th and the JV boys
finishing 4th. Our varsity girls finished 10th, the JV girls finished 8th,
and the frosh-soph boys finished 11th.
521 runners finished the 5 races 81 in the varsity boys, 79 in the varisty girls,
93 in the frosh-soph boys, 96 in the JV girls, and 149 in the JV boys.
Our next race will be on 10/18 a Friday in Toro Park, which is between Salinas
and Monterey. It will be a 3-mile race. The first and last miles are flat but
the middle mile has several hills.

Good effort by all of you on this difficult course. If you want to know how you
did in comparison to your last race at Crystal Springs, my guess is that the boys
should subtract 20 seconds from their Friday time and the girls 30 seconds in
order to get an equivalent Crystal Springs time. There are only two weeks left
until the league finals at Crystal on 11/5. So, lets train hard during the
remaining time.

This was a very good day as all of you ran very well.
Our varsity boys finished 3rd, the JV boys finished 5th,
and the varsity girls finished 10th. We have got two
more races to run the Lynbrook Invitational and the
league finals and, hopefully, a third race the CCS
meet. So, lets continue to work hard for the next few
days.
There were 146 runners in the varsity boys race, 129 in
the JV boys race, and 105 in the varsity girls race.
Our team times were 88:31 for the varsity boys and 114:19
for the varsity girls. The at-large standard for the CCS
